Registration Process and Background
Our volunteer organization is a part of the Southern Maryland Youth Soccer League (SMYSL) which is under the cognizance of the Charles County Parks and Outdoor Sports Youth Soccer Program. The CCYSL Outdoor Soccer Program is comprised of six (6) separate Associations, which includes our own and those listed: Indian Head Soccer Association, La Plata Youth Soccer Association, Pisgah Soccer Association, Southern Maryland Youth Organization and Waldorf Soccer Club.
Spring season registration opens late December or early January and remains open through early part of March with the season beginning in early April. The Fall season registration opens about mid June through early August with the season starting in early September. Practices typically starts after registration is closed and will run from the start of the season on through the end of sports season. League play takes place in the Spring and Fall of the year.
As registration proceeds, we assign kids to an age appropriate team grouped by one of the five (5) Age Divisions: U6, U8,U10, U12, U15, and U19. When numbers are available, we will have separate boy and girls teams. If not, it will be a co-ed team. As we progress through our registration period, we look to see how the numbers divide out by age group to determine if we create one or more teams or continue registration to see if we can get enough kids to fill those spots available. (Note: The number of players per team is set per county guidelines.)
Once teams are set according to county guidelines, we then organize our volunteer coaches to coach a team. At times that's easy because we do have some coaches/parents who continue to coach through the years. Once the teams and coaches are set, the coaches are provided a list of players who constitute his or her team. He or she will then contact their team. Depending on that coaches work schedule and availability, they will set their own day/times for practices. This of course is coordinated effort within the organization depending on field availability and number of teams we need to serve. Even though, we do have a home field the county assigns us, they do take fields out of service for rotation, etc and this further impacts our planning ability... (Note: Any new head coach must be 21 years or older and all volunteers must be certified by the county with a background check.)
According to county scheduling guidelines, we must submit to them all of our teams as well as the players information by a certain date. Once teams are set, the county will organize and set the schedules and release them to all organizations. This normally occurs one to two week before the leagues starts.
At times we may hold open a longer registration period in order to get the numbers required to fill that team in that age group. We do what we can to accommodate your child's/parents needs to play for our organization. At some point we must close our registration period in order to meet the deadlines enforced by SMYSL.
Note about our Registrations: For players new to the Bryans Road Soccer Association, you will need to bring proof of age to Walk-In Registration or the first soccer practice. Teams and their respective age groups are filled based on the player's calendar year age. Note, as of 2016, US Youth Soccer shifted from a school-year to calendar year for the age grouping of teams. A Calendar Year Age Matrix 2016-2025 is provided for your convenience.
